Whole 30: The Next Five Days

We’ve made it a week and then some. The weekend included travel—a ~700 round-trip car ride with two of my kids to my hometown for a niece’s graduation.

I didn’t want to be that guy in town, so I didn’t mention the cult, er, diet, to anyone. It wasn’t easy eating at a reception, avoiding cake, keeping kiddos fed, not eating at the lunch, and whatnot, but it happened.

The fast food option (since, being with kids, that seemed like the best option) I went with what Whataburger. This Texas staple is great, but even on the Whole 30, solid. I went with their regular hamburger (literally, the Whataburger) with added avocado and jalapeños. I felt weird ordering it bunless, so I removed the buns myself. I have my limits.

Instead of fries, I went with apple slices, which surprisingly didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. All in all, I was pretty happy with it and the kids were happy—we rarely go to fast food places and Whataburger is that place Catalina remembers on a roadtrip I took with just the two of us.

Otherwise, a lot of fruit and a lot of meat between the breakfast at the hotel, the reception, and the food in route. Probably the first trip that I lost weight while away from home.1

Vanessa tells me that Day 10 is the day that, if you’re going to drop out, is the day most people do. The appeal of the diet has worn off and it’s just work now. Thankfully, Vanessa does all that work so I’m feeling good. 😀

On the beer front, while on a store run for even-more-sweet potatoes, I walked by the beer section and spotted 99¢ cans of Sam Adams Nitro Coffee Stout, normally a 4-pack is $9.99. I’m not sure what is wrong with it, but I’ll find out in about 20 days.

  1. The Whole30 Ten Commandments, or whatever they call it, make a big deal about not checking a scale for the month. Forget that. I’ve weighed myself daily for a couple of years now and, trust me, I’m long past trying to over-analyze exactly what I’ve done in the last 24 hours to provide me a two-ounce chance of weight.
